The final of the big concerts the club organised went off with a bang on Friday night last. Mary Black played to a crowd of over 300 fans in the beautifully presented club hall. The support act, Mary’s daughter, Rose O’Reilly set the tone for a great night with her performance and once Mary took to the stage the huge crowd were treated to an evening of top class entertainment. Well done to the organisers of this and the other concerts that the Gaa club have brought to Cobh in the past two years. In that time the people of Cobh and the locality have had the opportunity to enjoy, Frances Black, Wolfe Tones, The Furey’s, Bagatelle, Brian Kennedy and finally Mary Black on their own doorstep.
Johnny Leahy Hurling Blitz
Cobh played host to a feast of hurling on Saturday 21st August when the club ran the annual Johnny Leahy blitz. First up were the U9 hurlers and in a competition featuring Sars, Carrigaline, Ballygarvan and Cobh, the local lads came out on top. The team featured two great grand-children of Johnny, Diarmuid Kearney and Tara Looney. The U9 competition was closely contested throughout and there was very little between any of the teams. In the U12 blitz that followed, we had Fr. O’Neill’s, Russell Rvrs, Kiltha Óg and again the Cobh team. This time Cobh, with Pádi Kearney another great grandchild of Johnny, captaining the side, lost out to Fr. O’Neill’s in an exciting final. The Cobh team were unfortunate to be missing Ciarán Leahy, who was in Athlone representing County Cork in the Long Puck competition of the Community Games. Ciarán, yet another great grandchild of Johnny, finished in 9th place overall out of the 32 competitors, an excellent achievement. This was a wonderful day of hurling for the Cobh lads and, given that we also had our U10’s on duty at a blitz in Glanmire on the same day it shows the big participation levels we now have.
