Walking Tours of Spike Island to begin this weekend

Cork County Council has granted licences that will facilitate the first guided walking tours of Spike Island commencing this weekend. The boat will be operated by Cobh based Marine Transport Services Ltd. and the tour will be led by historian Michael Martin of the Titanic Trail.

It is expected that the first boat capable of carrying 70 passengers will leave from Kennedy Pier in the centre of Cobh at 2pm on Saturday 31st July and will operate again on Sunday. Fares will be €12.50 per adult with children under 8 travelling free and a family rate of €30 will also be available. Tickets will be available on a first come first served basis from the ticket office at the entrance to Kennedy Pier. This first step in the process to open Spike Island up to the people is warmely welcomed by Cobh Tourism. “Spike Island is another uique and compelling reason to visit Cobh and see all that Cobh and Cork Harbour has to offer”, commented Cobh Tourism Chairman Hendrick Verwey. “The fascinating history of Spike Island and its immense potential will be seen in its raw state and told by one of the foremost authorities on Spike Island’s
history”,he continued.
