Cork East TDs should stand up for renters & support SF bill to ban rent increases – Pat Buckley
Sinn Féin TD for Cork East Pat Buckley has urged all TDs in the area to “stand up for renters and support Sinn Féin’s Ban on Rent Increases Bill” when it comes before the Dáil next Thursday.
He said:
“Next Thursday, Sinn Féin’s Ban on Rent Increases Bill will be debated and voted on in the Dáil.
“This is a vitally important piece of legislation that will make a real difference for renters who are pushed to the pin of their collar with rising rents.
“Earlier this week, the ESRI published a report highlighting the impact of high rents on increased commutes for working people. It confirms that ‘city workers often face a choice between paying high housing costs to live close to work or making long commutes from areas with lower costs of accommodation’.
Towns like Midleton, Mallow, Cobh, Youghal have all seen year on year increases in rent for tenants who are struggling. These increase are driven by bad regulation and poor provision of housing. Profits go up for landlords while the quality of accommodation seems to be getting worse.
“Last December, the Dáil passed Sinn Féin’s Rent Freeze Bill, with support from Fianna Fáil and the Green Party. The Bill we are tabling next week would allow rents to fall and ban any future rent increases for three years.
“If Fianna Fáil and the Green Party are serious about protecting renters, they will support our Bill.
I am calling on all TDs to do the right thing, stand up for renters and vote in favour of the Ban on Rent Increases Bill on Thursday.”
