Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley has officially opened the new Carrigtwohill Playground and Community Campus, including a new Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), a replacement for the old playground facility and upgrades to the carpark.

Cork County Council carried out the removal of the old playground, the design and construction of the carpark and provided an allocation of €40,000 through its Cobh Municipal District, €50,000 from the Council’s Municipal District Operations and Rural Development funding and €20,000 through South Cork Local Community Development Committee. This funding was combined with a €100,000 Town and Village Renewal Grant from the Department of Rural and Community Development and €50,000 raised from the local community by the Carrigtwohill Playground Committee and Carrigtwohill Community Council to bring this project to completion. Browne Brothers Site Services Ltd were the main contractor for the playground and MUGA.

Speaking at the opening event, Mayor Linehan Foley said;

“Carrigtwohill Playground Committee and Carrigtwohill Community Council have done outstanding work in raising the funds for this, and as a result, have brought to life an amenity that the entire community can take great pride in. This project is a fantastic example of what can be achieved by communities with support from Cork County Council and national funding.”

Chief Executive of Cork County Council Tim Lucey added;

“This playground will provide a great amenity for people in Carrigtwohill to enjoy for years to come. Cork County Council’s mission is to maximise quality of life for our residents. Measures taken to enhance outdoor space and amenities in our towns and villages under Project ACT, combined with projects such as this, contribute greatly to this mission by providing recreational spaces that are vital for healthy and happy communities.”

For the safety of all who use the playground, parents and guardians are reminded to ensure adherence to current Covid 19 public health guidance.
