– FG government must realise that recruiting more doctors and nurses is the only solution to crisis –
“More than one in ten Cork people waiting for an inpatient procedure at the city’s three hospitals are waiting longer than 12 months,” according to Fianna Fáil’s Bye-Election candidate, Cllr. Pádraig O’Sullivan.
Cllr. O’Sullivan was commenting following an analysis of the latest waiting list figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund.
“At the end of October, there were 4282 people waiting for an inpatient or day case procedure at Cork University Hospital (1167), Mercy University Hospital (881) or the South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (2215).
“Worryingly, 459 of them, or 10.76%, were waiting longer than 12 months for their procedure with a staggering 17% of patients at CUH waiting longer than 12 months.
“Increasing lists are an all too common trend in health care in Ireland. Under successive Fine Gael-led governments and Fine Gael Health Ministers, things have gotten progressively worse.
“Only last week, we heard of disgraceful reports of elderly people lying on hospital trolleys awaiting admission or just to be seen in our Emergency Departments.
“Hospital staff are doing their best but their hands are being tied behind their backs by Fine Gael’s inability to get a handle on the health service.
“Until more doctors, nurses and other clinical staff are employed, Cork people will continue to suffer from wait times that, in any other developed country, would simply not be tolerated,” concluded O’Sullivan.
