camogie-crest400x4001Cobh U16 Camogie started their County League with a home game against Sliabh Rua on Wednesday 16th April in Pairc Ui Chonaill Cobh. The game was played in glorious conditions on an excellent pitch and both teams served up an excellent match. Sliabh Rua started well but the Cobh defence well marshalled by Sorcha McKeown (Capt), Aisling Farrell and Sophie Maher dealt well with all that came their way. However Cobh came more into the game and somewhat against the run of play took the lead after good work by Ashling Bardsley found Shannid McGrath who in turn played a great pass to Katelyn Quinlann who showed her class with an unstoppable finish from the 21.

Cobh took great heart from this goal and continued to put the pressure on, and were unlucky not to add to their score.

Sliabh Rua took over again and after some narrow misses finally found their range with 2 goals to take the lead. Now playing with great confidence Sliabh Rua continued to create chances but found Tara Looney in great form in the Cobh goal. As the half wore on Aoife Sheehan, Jen McCarthy and Ellen Stafford began to get on top in the half back line andCobh saw out the half without conceding further. HT Sliabh Rua 2-0 V 1-0 Cobh

Cobh turned over to play with the wind and were a completely different team, playing more direct camogie with midfielders Aggie Douglas and Aoife O Connor dominating layed siege on the Sliabh Rua goal. The Equaliser took some time to come but Megan Foley driving forward at every opportunity broke through to finish well to the back of the net. It was all Cobh now but they were guilty of some missed opportunities. Shannid Mcgrath put Cobh ahead with a great point under pressure after good work from Chloe Thompson, Orla Damery & Laura Stafford. Cobhedged further ahead with lovely a point from Katelynn Quinlann after good play from Megan Foley and Emily Farrell.

Sliabh Rua sensing that the game was slipping away upped their play and created some opportunities but the Cobh defence were proving a tough nut to crack. With two minutes to go Sliabh Rua were awarded a free and after a goal mouth scramble Sliabh Rua goaled to lead by 1 point. With time almost up Cobh won the puck out and won a free 60 metres out from the Sliabh Rua goal. Cork player Aoife Sheehan elected to take the free and showed her character with a terrific score under immense pressure much to the delight of her team mates and Supporters. The match ended in a drawCobh 2-3 V 3-0 Sliabh Rua.

Both teams deserve great credit for the quality of Camogie on show in a very competitive but sporting game. Cobh will be well pleased with their second half performance.
