spikeadv1Spike Island Adventure www.spikeadventure.com have joined together with Breaking the Silence www.facebook.com/btscobh to bring you an adventure race with a difference. It’s a family affair. Your entry fee includes a family ferry ticket (2 adults, 2 kids) and entry for one member of the family. But where is the fun I hear you ask? Well, there are three different sectors to the race, and they do not have to be completed by the same person… And the reason there are three sectors, but four tickets, I hear you ask? Well someone has to take the photographs…
Ferry times:
Kennedy Pier: 9am every hour on the hours (midday ferry is too late for competitors)
Spike Island Pier: 1.30pm every hour on the half hour (last ferry at 4.30pm)

The race itself will be time trialed in each of the sectors. Now the big question, what are the sectors?

The kayaking sector:
1,000 meter paddle on a sit on top kayak, all of the equipment is provided for you.

The running sector:
5,000 meter run in ever decreasing circles around the fort. First you run the Glacier walk around the fort, then you run the moat protecting the fort, followed by running the quadrangle inside the fort.

The stockade:
Well this is an adventure race with a difference. The stockade is a purpose built assault course stretching over 1km of obstacles. There are 26 such obstacles in situ and are designed around the 1946 Irish Army PT manual. You’ll be introduced to some of our firm favourites as the “pillbox”, the “trench” and the “cabin”, but I don’t want to give too much away as the surprise is half the fun…

After the race:
After all of the huffing and puffing is done, we’ll open the assault course to everyone, to enjoy the rest of the day in the manner for which it was built. Family Fun. Our instructors will be on hand to help you and your family through the various parts of the course. The fort and the rest of the island will be at your disposal, so please feel free to explore the island.

Please remember that it is a family fun day in aid of Breaking the Silence, and family is one of the key factors to successfully Breaking the Silence. So, if you see any of our volunteers shaking a donations bucket in your direction, use the last of your energy to run towards the bucket….
