It is with great pleasure that we can report on, what was a massive success, last Saturday. Cobh Pirates RFC was the venue for a game between the Munster Junior team and a Cobh Pirates invitational side. All gate and bbq proceeds for the day are going to the Childrens Leukemia Ward at the Mercy Hospital Cork and Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.
Ticket sales prior to the event were excellent with over 500 sold, but as the sun came out to play on Saturday, so did the people of Cobh. Almost 400 people payed on the gate to make the attending crowd soar towards 700 or more people. A sight to behold was the girls and boys who made their confirmation earlier in the day enjoying themselves in the Paddock.
The Munster juniors treated the day as a warm up for their upcoming inter-pro series, which is commencing this coming Saturday. So with this in mind the game was always going to be competitive in the best possible way.
The invitational team, whose panel contained no less than 10 Pirates, were indeed very strong and no ground was given. In the ideal conditions on a superb pitch a fast and hard game was to follow with the Juniors holding out for a narrow victory in the end. Credit and gratitude must be given to these players who took time out, some from very bust schedules , to make the day happen. Notably ex Irish player David Corkery and current senior rugby and ex Cork Hurler Diarmuid O Sullivan. Also a special thanks to Ronan O Gara and Anthony Horgan who popped in to show their support for the event. Below are the players that formed the Cobh side for the day, captained by u19 World Cup winner and Cobhs own Brendan Ronan.
