Despite the cold breeze, the people of Cobh turned out in great numbers to watch the 3.30pm St.Patrick’s Day parade through the town. There is no doubt that this year topped any parade of previous years, with a massive thirty floats from a mixture of sporting, cultural groups and many businesses across the community taking part led as usual by our own St.Patrick himself, Joe Devlin.
Krazy Kastles won the perpetual shield for ‘Best Float’, and as always Cobh Youth Services had an interesting and colourful entry. Gibbs Pharmacy took the prize for best ‘Shop Window Display’, with second going to Gemini Unisex Hairdressers. Westbourne House followed in third place. The Cobh Credit Union prize of a car was also presented immediately after the Parade.
Parade organisers, See You in Cobh, Cobh Tourism and Cobh Tidy Towns committee worked together effortlessly to produce a Parade that the people of Cobh can be proud of. The co-operation and assistance of so many groups and businesses made their task so much easier.
Hendrick Verwey, of the See You In Cobh organizing group told the Cobh Edition that ‘’ the highlight of the day was the massive good humoured crowd that lined the full length of the town. The huge number of children participating was good to see’’. He also expressed his gratitude and thanks to all involved and who took part on the day. ‘’I would sincerely like to thank all of the entries, many of whom went to great effort to turn out in large numbers and make their floats colourful.’’
The Organisers also gave special thanks to the following:
Con Dennehy Haulage for the reviewing stand
Port of Cork for the Barriers and Paul Whelan for transporting them
Hillside Nurseries, Glounthaune and Hendrick Verwey for the plants for reviewing stand
Cobh Town Council for Road Closures
Damien O’Rourke for Sound
Buster Luscombe and Trad group Luasca
