Cobh advance to the third round of the East cork Junior A Football championship after defeating Aghada on Friday evening last. Both teams started well and shared a lot of the possession around the middle of the field as both teams aimed to get the opening scores on the board. Allen Wally delivered some great ball into Cobh’s lively forwards in the opening stages which allowed Cobh build up a small lead coming towards the half time whistle. Brian Aherne was immense at centre back and made some great interceptions and was hassling the Aghada attackers at every chance he got. The Cobh defenders played excellent as a unit and were proving very stubborn as they forced the Agahda men to kick a lot of wides. Lee Mc dermott booted over some place ball kicks and put in great work up and down the touchline. With a minor lead of a couple of points after the break, Cobh suffered a blow when Kyle Downing was dismissed for an off the ball incident, however it was the Cobh men that upped their game at this stage and never looked back from this point.
Jack Ronan and Dave Mc Carthey were in great form as they won great possession in the forward line while having an extra man to deal with. It was through their tireless efforts that Cobh worked an extremely well taken goal as Allen Whally slotted home to put Cobh well out on front. In fairness to Aghada they never gave up and the Cobh defenders had to deal with a late surge but again Aghada failed to take advantage of some scoring opportunities. Frank Mc Call then put the nail in Aghada’s Coffin as he got down well to save a penalty in the closing stages. All in all it was a great team effort from the Cobh men as they come out on the right side of this inner harbour derby! Next up for Cobh is Glenbower Rovers in the third round next Friday Night. Best of Luck lads keep the effort up!
