U16 National Cup

Newbridge Town 2 Springfield Ramblers 1
Despite a great second half performance Springfield Ramblers were unlucky to lose to an excellent Newbridge team. This performance highlighted how this team has developed during the season and how the effort and commitment of the players proves that by working hard you can achieve. The major disappointment of the game was that the referee was not at the same standard of both teams and his performance did not help Springfield Ramblers. Springfield Ramblers were unlucky not to take the lead when the impressive George Gill split the home defence and put Shane Marshall free but his shot went narrowly wide. With Stephen Horgan and Sean McLoughlin defending well Springfield Ramblers were well in the game. A mistake by the referee in awarding Newbridge a corner proved costly for Springfield Ramblers as poor defending allowed Newbridge take the lead. Cathal O’Hanlon showed his class when he produced a fine save from a Newbridge attack. The excellent Dean Keating showed his class when he blocked a fine effort by Newbridge. The home team went two up when a mix up in the Springfield Ramblers defence allowed Newbridge to score. Despite this set back Springfield Ramblers kept pressure on the home team with Adam Devlin and Tim Fannin driving the team forward and when Daniel Barry set Michael Meaney free to attack the home defence the referee denied Springfield Ramblers a penalty.

Michael Meaney challenges for possession

The team was asked by their coaches at Half Time to prove how good a team they were and their performance proved this, with James Stoat and George Gill pulling the strings in midfield and John Kennedy and Michael Meaney putting pressure on the home defence Springfield Ramblers were unlucky to score on a few occasions. With Captain Cathal O’Hanlon driving the team forward and every player giving 100% effort Springfield Ramblers reduced the arrears when James Stoat cut through the home defence, played a one-two and on receiving the return pass scored with a well-placed drive. As Springfield Ramblers drove forward to seek an equaliser both John Kennedy and Michael Meaney were unlucky not to score. The poor standard of refereeing was highlighted in this section of the game when Springfield Ramblers players were penalised on every occasion they tackled for the ball and the same standards were not applied to the home team.

The club would like to highlight and thank the Newbridge club for the hospitality and friendship they showed us on the day. It was good to see and old player Tommy Cragoe at the game. The Management team and players would like to thank all those who travelled on the day and for the support they gave the team both on the day and during the cup run.
