SAT MAY 21

U 11 Division 6

Leeds A 1 Springfield Ramblers A 0

U 15 Division 1

Springfield Ramblers 4 Avondale United 4

With only a point required to gain promotion Springfield Ramblers started brightly taking the game to Avondale and dominated the early exchanges. The game turned when the Rams were ruthlessly punished after conceding two free kicks on the edge of the area. Avondale were on fire now and they added two
more before half time.

The Rams were not beaten yet however and showed great desire at the start of the second half, and were rewarded when Sean McLoughlin played the ball to Cormac Downing whose neat flick sent Jack Ronan through to deliver a clinical finish.

Man of the match Jack Ronan’s hard work was rewarded again when he finished well to make it 4-2. Captain Jason Keating then made it 4-3 converting from a corner to make it game on and Jack completed the comeback with a determined finish to seal his hat-trick and cap an outstanding team performance. This hard won point was enough to seal promotion to the Premier League, a much deserved reward for the hard work put in by the squad over the year.

U 16 Division 4

Blarney United A 1 Springfield Ramblers 4

The teams met again two days after the first encounter and the players provided us all with a great exhibition of football to end their season and their time together. We opened the scoring when Glen Kavanagh slotted home from close range after a mistake by the defence. Karl Preston headed home a great ball into the top corner from a corner from Adam Rasmussen who then slotted home himself with a low free kick bent around the wall. The scoring was complete when Ricky Parker scored his first goal for the club again much to the delight to all the players and management. The team has had a great season and will probably finish third in the league.

The whole team played well today with the defence of Jason Keating, Ricky Parker, Conor McLoughlin and Cormac Downing doing outstanding, with the midfield of Adam Rasmussen, Karl Preston, Dylan Kinehan and Luke Doyle playing some very creative football and up front Clive Donnachie and Glenn Kavanagh work well together. The four subs of Mark O’Driscoll, Mark Hannon, Ronan Horgan, and in particular Aaron Gilmore all played well when they came on today.

U 16 Premier

Cobh Ramblers 1 Corinthian Boys 1

At the end of a tumultuous week in a fantastic season in the history of the Springfield Ramblers football club our senior side played out a one all draw with Corinthian Boys. This team has been through the mill and experienced a myriad of emotions in the last fourteen days. They played two national Cup matches in Dublin one of which went to extra time and penalties, the other culminating in the first success for a Cobh side in this competition with the victory over Belvedere last Sunday. They then faced Ringmahon Rangers in the local cup semi-final on Wednesday, losing out on a 2-0 score line. The following day eleven of the squad won the Football Association of Cork Schools Junior Cup for Coláiste Muire in a victory over Nagle Community College of Blackrock. Tiredness is the main emotion being felt by the squad today.

At a beautifully appointed John Murphy Memorial Park on a windswept morning the variety of emotions continued as this game was the proverbial game of two halves. The first half belonged to Corinthians as their neat footwork and precision passing tore apart a weary looking Cobh side. Their efforts were rewarded when Ramblers conceded possession on the left and from the resultant passage of play Corinthians scored.

The second half continued in the same vein for the first ten minutes until Ramblers began to get a foothold in the game. Needing only a point to secure the runners up spot in the Premier league the home side upped the tempo and with the introduction of substitutes Paul Ronan and Tony O’Donovan they began to win the midfield battle. The equaliser came when O’Donovan won the ball in midfield and released right back Adam Thompson. He fed Jason Dunphy down the wing who fired in a great cross which was finished to the net by Dave Cahill for a brilliant goal. The teams could not be separated from then until the end of the match.
