Under 12 National Cup
Springfield Ramblers 3 St. Brendan’s Park 1
This was a great win for Springfield Ramblers Under 12 Premier League side in this National Cup last sixteen tie at a cold and windswept VEC Grounds. The St Brendan’s Park side from Tralee made a great start and caught the home defence cold in the first minute by pouncing on a defensive error to take an early lead. The home side playing against a stiff breeze reacted well and settled to the task of recovering the deficit. They were rewarded for their efforts shortly after falling behind when Adam Horgan made a great run through the heart of the away defence and released Charlie Fleming to finish to the net for the equaliser. The first half continued in the same vein as each side fought for the advantage in an end to end game.
The second half saw a resumption of the action with both sides playing some great football. The home side survived a scare midway through the half when goalkeeper Dave Coffey made a brilliant full length save from a great strike from a St Brendan’s forward. The game turned in favour of the home side shortly after when Adam Horgan made another great run but this time he went all the way himself and beat the last defender and the goalkeeper before slotting the ball into the empty goal. Ramblers were on top now and the tie was sealed when Neil Harte struck a beauty into the top corner from twenty yards to the great joy of the watching supporters. A great team performance overall now sets up a quarter final tie at home to Cherry Orchard or Belvedere from Dublin.
The club would like to thank the St Brendan’s Park club for the sporting way in which they approached the game and commiserations to the young lads who played their hearts out for their club. The Under 12 coaching staff expresses their sincere thanks to Frank Collins and Niall Abbott for their work in preparing the excellent playing surface for the game. Thanks also to Frank for organising refreshments for the visitors after the game.
