Cobh Pirates Notes 9th January

Published

on

Cobh Pirates adult teams had two important fixtures lined up last weekend with both teams away in their respective leagues. The cold weather claimed another fixture when the Junior 2 game versus University College Cork  was postponed due to the playing surface being deemed unsafe due to frost.

In the other fixture of the day the Junior ones traveled to Clonmel in the Munster Junior 1 league. With only a couple of points separating these two sides it was shaping up for a close yet important tie. Pirates bad run of injuries continued in the opening exchanges with player/coach Robbie Doyle forced off the field with a gash that would later get 7 sutures.

From here on Pirates had to fight hard to regroup with Mark Chandler reverting back to the number 9 position. The remainder of the half was very evenly matched with only 3 points separating the teams at half time, Clonmel leading 3-0. At the beginning of the 2nd half Clonmel took advantage of a Pirates sin binning to accumulate scores and this had Cobh battling gallantly for the remainder of the game only to lose out on a score line of 24 to 3.

Next Sunday has the Junior 1 team away to Old Christians, again in the league, at 2.30pm. The Junior 2s are also away in league action, playing Highfield at 12 noon. The recently established Pirates ladies section are calling all ladies interested in taking up the sport of rugby to come and give it a go. All levels are welcomed, complete beginners or those with a bit of experience. Training is on Monday and Wednesday night at 7.30 pm. For further info email pro@cobhpirates.com
Cobh Pirates RFC will be aligning with the IRFU Charitable Trust that supports seriously injured players over the month of January. We ask everyone involved in the club, players, supporters & parents, etc… to donate any unused mobile phones to the trust. We will have a collection box in the clubhouse for the month of January. All phones donated will enable Cobh Pirates claim sports equipment vouchers for the Juvenile section of the club. Not alone are you supporting a great cause as a rugby supporter (IRFU Charitable Trust for seriously injured players) but, you are enabling us to fund raise for one of the most important sections for the club. So….if you got a new phone from Xmas and have no use for the old one, or will search thru’ those cupboards and donate any old phone…It will be really appreciated…For more details, etc.. contact Kieran McKeown, Juvenile Chairman at youths@cobhpirates.com
