“Cobh Juveniles are Winners of Harbour Shield 2010!
Earlier in the year, four Cork Golf Clubs (Cobh, Douglas, Mahon and Rafeen Golf Club) competed for the second year running in a Juvenile interclub competition called “The Harbour Shield”. The local team came out winners of the Harbour Shield this year, giving a welcome boost to the work done by Cobh’s Juvenile officers of 2010 (Tim McCormick and Mick Gould). Congratulations!
On 27th October 2010, the four teams played an exhibition game on the new Marino Course in Cobh. The presentation of the Harbour Shield took place after the game in the presence of Michael Cashman, Chairman of Munster Branch GUI (front, 2nd from left in picture).
The “Harbour Shield” competition was established in 2009, and in its first year won by Mahon GC. It is played on a home and away basis. The competition aims to promote Juvenile golf, introduce all players to team golf, and also compete on different courses. Each team plays the others clubs and after all matches are completed, the winners receive the Harbour Shield Trophy. Great interest was already expressed last year by all participating Clubs and the competition has now become an annual fixture. Congratulations go to all players and also juvenile officers and club officials who helped to make this possible. A lot of preparation and support work is needed to organize this competition. The picture shows the victorious Cobh Team with Cobh GC and GUI representatives. The Team Members were: Luke Donnachie (Team Captain), and (in no particular order) George Gill, Gavin Lynch, David Meaney, Jack Ronahon, Jamie Moynihan, Philip Molloy, Colm O’Leary, Sean O’Neill and Mick Meaney. “
