Having gotten of to the worst possible start last week both of the adult teams bounced back this week to record wins carrying the underdog tag in both games.
The junior 2s played against a young and strong UCC team in the Paddock. UCC ran the ball at every oppurtunity and with great pace greated problems for Cobh outwide. The blend of youth and experience on the Cobh team held tough, even with a 9 point deficit with 20 minutes remaining, ran out eventual 10 point victors. The Cobh pack, mastered by Peter Ahearn and Dave Mulcahy, dominated the close game making ground at every oppurtunityand done well in the lineout exchanges, Jamie McDermott, Arron Kennedy and Tadgh Kelleher dominating at every chance. With the scoreline at 38-28 in favour of Cobh it was an entertaining game with no questions unasked. Those to cross the UCC line included Sean McDermot, Jerry Higgins and Dave Mulcahy.
The Junior 1s made the trip to Skibereen in the 2nd game of the MJL. Never an easy place to play Cobh made the trip on the back of last weeks defeat to Waterpark. The pack fronted up scrummaging very well and this gave the backs a little room to move. Alan Langford worked well to score from a good kick ahead from John Barry Murphy. This gave Pirates the spur they needed, and with the pack working tiredlessy Josey Hoynes ran over the line again, from the full back position, to touchdown for Pirates second try. Mark Chandler got two penalties and a conversion from the boot to give Pirates an eventual 7 point away victory.
Next Sunday sees the Junior 1s at home to Cashel, now coached by cobh man and Munster Junior coach Ian Dunne.
