Sirius Arts Centre presents an evening in conversation with award winning Italian photojournalist and photographic artist, Marco Vernaschi.
“Reality is multifaceted” Marco Vernaschi states,” and each time you point a camera and open your shutter, as a witness you’re choosing how and what to show. This is definitely a partial witnessing, a subjective process” Italian photographer, Marco Vernaschi has covered a vast range of subject matter, from documenting drug trafficking in Guinea Bissau, to his most recent project that takes a more personal perspective of the world. Marco’s work has featured in many international publications including: GEO, Newsweek, National Geographic and the Sunday Times – His photographs have also been exhibited in a number of prestigious international art galleries and is part of many major collections.
Marco Vernaschi began his photographic career at the age of 25 and has never enrolled in any formal photographic training. For Marco technical aspects of photography have never been as important the artist behind the lens and has strong feelings about the direction that photojournalism has taken in the 21st century. “Photography can contribute to a change and it can contribute to opening people’s minds and show things that would otherwise stay in the shadows, but I also think that the power of photojournalism is often overrated.”
Marco will be on a short artist in residency to continue work on his latest personal project titled “Placebo” and has graciously offered to engage in this evening of a short presentation of his past work and discussion with the audience .
Marco Vernaschi has received the following awards for his photographs:
