5.00pm as the lights are switched on

Despite what one could only describe as terrible weather conditions, a couple of hundred determined children still turned out to visit Santa at the Sirius Arts Centre ‘Christmas In Cobh’ event yesterday. At one point in the afternoon the downpour was so heavy that it looked like we were in for another day of the recently experienced floods. Santa arrived by boat to a very blustery Pier Head at 12 noon as expected and after greeting parents and children awaiting his arrival, he was swiftly transported to the Sirius Arts Center where he dried off and began his long afternoon of posing for photo’s and handing out parcels to the kids.

Also taking place at the Commodore Hotel during the afternoon was the Artykids – Free Children’s Christmas Art Workshop where the children were entertained and supervised whilst taking part in all types of things related to creative art. Guest Choirs and Musicians were also on hand to entertain for the afternoon, however due to the terrible weather conditions all musical related aspects of the afternoon had to be moved to the Heritage Centre. Well, all but one……and as per normal the Cobh Confraternity Band braved the intense conditions and played away outside the GPO. (Pic below)

5.00pm wasn’t long coming and what should realy have been the event of the afternoon, the switching on of the XMas tree lights, was also overshadowed by the bad weather. Nonetheless, in typical Cobh spirit this went ahead at 5.00pm on the dot with Mayor Whitty and Cobh Chamber’s Michael Martin on hand to do the honours.
