Letters to Cobh Edition: Hedgehogs declining numbers on the Great Island

Published

on

Sorry to report today July 29th yet another loss of these beautiful gentle animals on our ‘Great Island’, The Hedgehog.

The area from the ferry past Marino is a historical breeding habitat area for the hedgehog. It is their Island as well as ours.

I post today this sad photo of a large hedgehog that I removed of the main road near Pegs and the Ferry. It could have been carrying its young.

With the opening of the new ferry riverside cafes, can we spare a thought for our diminishing wildlife please. Maybe some educational signage for visitors and customers and commuters to Cobh highlighting the habitats of this area could be added to this new development. It would be a lovely addition to this new project and an ecological public awareness raising initiative.

With the high level of housing/commercial development on the Great Island habitats are being lost at a very high rate.

Are we just ‘talking the talk’ about biodiversity or are we acting and protecting.

Dr Mary Stack
