A cheque for €35,000 was presented to the Irish Cancer Society by the committee of the Great Island 10 Mile Road Race in Cobh recently. A number of fundraising events was organised over the past few months culminating in a 10 mile road race through the streets of Cobh and the Great Island which is set to become an annual event.

Speaking on behalf of the organising committee Eamonn Crotty said, “This is an incredible amount of money at any time but particularly so in the middle of a recession. There are many families in Cobh who have availed of palliative care and it is only through experiencing it can you fully appreciate the true value of a service like this. This community has gone some way to ensuring that this service will be available for others in the future.”

The first Great Island 10 mile road race took place on April 18th last with 513 runners taking part in the run and 230 people taking part in the 5k walk. Mayor of Cobh, Cllr. Paddy Whitty said “The feedback from those who took part in the race has been extremely positive and most of the participants spoke of the support they encountered along the route and at the finish line. The race created a great atmosphere and a sense of occasion and united the community spirit of the people of Cobh.”

Caroline McSweeney received the cheque on behalf of the Irish Cancer Society and said she was flabbergasted at the amount of money raised. “So much can be achieved with this money.” she said. “While it can be a difficult job it is an honour to be invited into the homes of the people we are attending to and it can be very rewarding.”

The organising committee of the ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ thanked everybody for making it happen. “It was a considerable undertaking and could not have been achieved without the help and support of so many in the community.” Eamonn Crotty said.  “Participants, sponsors, printers, media, stewards, gardai, Cobh Town Council, Cobh Community Centre, local schools, Cobh GAA Club and many more, combined to ensure that the day was a great occasion.”
