Motor Tax System Hits Less Well Off In Cobh, Changes Needed

Published

on

Our motor tax system pinches from the pockets of the less well off in Towns like Cobh and is in need of a good service, according to Labour Councillor John Mulvihill jnr.

Cllr Mulvihill continued “It is a tax on the less well off. It is unfair that people who can’t afford to pay a lump sum annual fee, get charged 13% more if they tax their car quarterly, or 11% more if they pay up half yearly. People need a taxed car to go to work or to look for work and they should not be penalised by unjustified charges.

“Last year almost one million of our motorists paid their motor tax quarter or half yearly, compared to the more than one and a half million* drivers who could afford the better value yearly fee.

“It seems that when it comes to motor tax a considerable number of people either haven’t the money or choose not to pay the cheaper yearly option.

In conclusion the Cobh town councillor stated “It needs to change so that the quarterly and half yearly fees are just that, 25% and 50% of the annual motor tax cost. The argument that periodical fees are higher due to administration costs is no longer valid now that car tax can be done on-line. There is virtually no extra expenditure involved and certainly no reason why those who can’t afford the lump sum have to pay more.”
