‘Exceptional’ is the only way to describe the Aslan gig that took place at what could easily call be one of Cobh’s best gig venues. The Crows Nest (Cobh) brought popular Irish band Aslan back to Cobh for the second time in six months (they also played last November at Cobh Ramblers) and the performance in front of a near capacity crowd was nothing short of brilliance. People travelled from as far away as Kerry, Limerick and Waterford to attend and one couple made the trip from Dublin who told us ”We saw the gig advertised on Facebook and the Cobh Edition site and being the big Aslan fans we are, we decided to make the trip down and stay overnight with friends. We know that Aslan always perform and tonight was no different. The venue is fantacstic altogether.”
This was a ‘pay-at-the-door’ gig and and the €15 entry fee didn’t seem to bother people. Reports coming out of the Crows Nest in the weeks leading up to the event were that they had been a massive response and I too was witness to this one afternoon when the phone must have rang at least eleven times in the space of twenty minutes by people looking to buy or book tickets. ”Well need to hire someone to answer the phones for this” said Bar Manager Gavin Higgins cheerfully.
On the night, Aslan took to the stage at about 10.00pm and played until about 11.30pm, by which time the near capacity crowd had gerenated so much heat that I had to step outside for air and whilst out there spoke to big Aslan fan Peter Foster who said ”What a performance. Delighted I made it here tonight. I hope the Crows bring them back again.”
It’s true that the Crows Nest could be one of Cobh’s finest gig locations and Crows Nest Group Marketing Manager Joe Murphy was already planning future events for the summer. ”I’m delighted” Joe told me. ”The turn-out is great. I’m in the process of establishing contact with outher big names and hope to bring them to the Crwos Nest in the near future. We have the facility. We have the crowd and we have a big band name here. What more could people want?” he added.
Cobh Edition spoke with many people throughout the night and not one person was unhappy with the overall feeling being that the Crows could rock as the leading live music venue in Cobh and I too would agree.
