The seniors had a crucial win over local rivals Midleton in the senior league tonight. Wanderers threatened on eight minutes when they broke quickly from a Midleton corner and with a two man advantage the Midleton player hacked down the runner taking a yellow for the team. Before the half hour mark Tony Flanagan had to make a great saving header from a shot that looked like it was destined for the net. Wanderers best chance of the half came on 40 minutes when Kyle Downing swung in a great cross from the left onto the head of Cal Sheehy but his header skewed high and wide.
Wanderers took the lead three minutes into the second half. Great interplay between Dave Curran and Jason Abbott put Eoin Hastings in the clear on the right. Eoin’s cross was perfect for Cal Sheehy to head home from a couple of yards out. Downing had to head off the line on 57 minutes to prevent Midleton scoring before the awarding of a penalty gave Chubbs the oppertunity to level and he took it, finishing emphatically from the spot on 64 minutes. Cian O’ Connor put in another great cross a minute later but Sheehy failed to restore the lead with a header over the top. Sheehy was not to be denied a minute later when he took a pass from Nathan O’ Connell before running clear and smashing a left foot strike past the keeper to make it 2-1.
Another great move down the right ended with Cian O’ Connor pulling the ball back for Jason Abbott to strike but his effort was straight at the keeper and easily saved. Wanderers wrapped up the points on 87 minutes. A cross-field ball was won by Cian O’ Connor ahead of his opponent and he ran from almost half-way before lashing a right foot effort that flew past the keeper to the net. Great performances all over the pitch tonight and a well deserved three points ahead of our Intermediate cup game next Saturday against Maynooth.
