We have continued to see growth in our playing numbers, particularly at underage level on the strength of our previous 2013-2018 Strategic Plan.
This updated plan is based on increased participation, player retention and growth of the player base and number of teams playing at adult level. We have demonstrated our ability to increase the number of juveniles partaking in Hurling and Gaelic Football. The next stage now is to increase the overall standard at Juvenile level and produce high quality players in large numbers to enable our adult teams to excel.
A Coaching Committee comprising of Paul McCarthy, Anthony O Regan, Liam Greaney and Adam Mc Carthy, under the stewardship of our Coaching Officer Pat Looney was formed in late 2018 and this committee have compiled a comprehensive coaching document.
Cobh GAA will launch its 5 year coaching plan on Wednesday night next at 7.15 in the club hall followed by a Question and Answers session with Sonia O Sullivan at 7.30, compared by Michael Martin of “Titanic Trail” fame. The Q&A will cover topics such as what it took Sonia to become the Number One Athlete in the world, the sacrifices involved and how she handled the ups and downs on the way. Sonia has been an iconic inspiration to the people of Cobh and beyond for a very long time and we hope some of this inspiration will have a positive impact on all present. This event is open to all other clubs and members of our community.
Finally, some key milestones for 2019 have already been achieved. Recently we conducted a very successful Referees Night. We invited Cathal Mc Allister an intercounty referee and Cobh’s own Eugene Ryan an international Rugby Citing Officer to give our club a better empathy for the role of the referee, reaffirming the importance of discipline while gaining knowledge from our colleagues in the Rugby world. We have also appointed our own Club member Adam McCarthy as Director of Strength and Conditioning. Adam is widely regarded in this area within the county. He has also created our club YouTube coaching channel which is a fantastic coaching resource for Cobh GAA going forward. We also have plans in place to bring in some external top-class coaches for Advanced Skills Coaching for our Juvenile members over the course of the season ahead.
