Cobh Readers and Writers Festival 2019

Cobh Readers and Writers Festival takes place from Thursday April 11th until Sunday April14th 2019, hosting a range of events across many venues in the picturesque seaside town of Cobh, Co.Cork.

A festival which provides for all the creative arts and which really does offer something for everyone. Competitions, Workshops, Theatre, Comedy, Music and Literature.

Chairman John Smith says ‘With our Festival now in its fourth year, we really hope that people will find time to take it all in. I look forward to welcoming everyone to take part with us, in this celebration of all the creative arts on our Great Island.’.

To begin the Festival on Thursday the 11th, John Smith will give an opening address in the Commodore Hotel at 7.30pm, then shortly after upstairs a screening of the classic film ‘Juno’ by the East Cork Cinema Club at 8pm and while traditional Irish music session kicks off in the Rob Roy Bar at 8.30pm. The Rob Roy will have live music each night.

To begin Friday the 12th, the Schools Short Story competition prize giving will be held at 4pm in Cobh Library with the winning entries being read by the budding authors of the Senior cycle and Junior cycle secondary school pupils, who along with the senior cycle primary school children haven taken part in crafting their tales to the theme of ‘Out of the Fog’.

Then later Friday night, the Sirius Arts Centre hosts gagmeister Michael Mee in his new show ‘The World According to Mee’ at 8pm.

On Saturday the 13th presents a wide variety of events for all, from the young to the young at heart. The Sirius Arts Centre hosts a Calligraphy workshop at 10.30pm. While in Cobh Library at 3.30 History Ireland Hedge School delivers a fascinating lecture on ‘A global history of the Irish Revolution’. Charlie Piggott preforms live in the Sirius Arts Centre at 7.30pm. The Bella Vista hosts the 1st Annual Poetry Night of the Festival with special guest poet Paul Casey of ‘Ó Bhéal’ fame at 8.30pm

Haulbowline Theatre Group is delighted to present “FICTION IS STRANGER THAN TRUTH” on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th of April in the Commodore Hotel. This production is comprised of 8 short plays and forms part of the Cobh Readers and Writers Festival 2019, promising an afternoon of comedy, tragedy, confrontation, revenge, dreaming, scheming and love.

Sunday the 14th saves some of the best till last. ‘Cobh Cottage Markets’ will make the promenade come alive with a wide range of artisan food and craft stalls from 11pm, the ‘Dowtcha Puppet Company’ will entertain all at 12.30pm and at 2pm. Then the musical legend John Spillane will take to the bandstand at 3pm. Artist John Adams will host an afternoon of readings in ‘Coliemore the Artists House’ from 3pm and at 5pm the Adult Short Story prize giving will take place there.

The festival closing event will be held at 5pm with music from ‘The Lanes’ in the Rob Roy, followed by sea shanties with the ‘Molgogglers’ at 7.30pm. The chairman will be there at 8.30pm to close the event for another year.
