Breaking The Silence Volunteers Train over 1600 in 2017!

Breaking The Silence is very proud to confirm that our very hard working volunteers trained over 1600 people in 2017 in the areas of Suicide Prevention, Self Harm & Mental Health. The primary courses that we specialise in delivering are the Safe Talk Workshop and the 2 Day ASIST Training Programme (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). We have recently began delivering training in the area of Self Harm; this course is called Understanding Self Harm which is another area that many people are in genuine difficulty with.

In addition to this training we have also delivered Mental Health Awareness Talks across all manufacturing sites in Cork that BMD operate on. These talks were given the name “Tim Talks” as they were driven by Tim Murphy from BMD. Breaking The Silence also delivered these talks at Merck Millipore. Schools were also in the mix and we also gave talks at primary and second schools during the year which were very well attended by both Teachers and Students.

We celebrated our 10 Year Anniversary in September this year at Cobh Heritage Centre. A diverse range of Speakers spoke about the important of Suicide & Mental Health Awareness, and most importantly the power of the prevention training in these areas. Representatives from Pieta House, BMD, Scoil Iosaef Naofa, Tusla & Caring for Carrigtwohill and the HSE spoke at this event.

Support after Suicide remains critically important and Breaking The Silence has contributed to the specific support guidebooks across the Cork Area that have been delivered by the HSE. These guidebooks are called “Lighting The Way” and are a very important resource for families at such a tragic time.

Our work goes from strength to strength from the fantastic support at local level we receive. Locals attend our fundraisers and completing fundraising on our behalf. We do hope that you will consider completing this training at some stage, the reality is that you WILL have an opportunity to use it.

Why not try a Safe Talk Workshop? We are continuously running these workshops! SafeTALK ‘suicide alertness for everyone’ is a 3.5 hour training programme that prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. These specific skills are called suicide alertness and are taught with the expectation that the person learning them will use them to help reduce suicide risk in their communities. Participants learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide in only a few hours.
