On Sunday, March 20th, Fota House will welcome the Hilliard Darby High School Choir to sing in the Long Gallery of Fota House.
The Hilliard Darby High School draws its students from Hilliard, a suburb of Columbus, Ohio. There are nearly 1400 on the school ‘roll’. The MUSIC DEPARTMENT is very strong, with 250 students taking part in the School’s various choirs – e.g. the concert choir, and several men’s and women’s choruses. The SYMPHONIC CHOIR is the foremost of these choirs: they rehearse daily throughout the year so as to perform concerts throughout Ohio and in other parts of the USA, under their highly experienced musical director Dr. Michael Martin. The choir has toured three times in England, also at the Pearl Harbor War Memorial, and at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. During the Choir’s tours of England they have performed variously at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, and at Salisbury and Worcester Cathedrals.
Dr. Martin has been Director of Choral Activities at the school for nearly twenty years: he has BA and MA degrees and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Ohio State University. He has toured with Hilliard Darby and other ensembles in many European countries. He is also a noted composer.
The 2016 tour, the first of the choir to Ireland, visits the Rock of Cashel, then Cork –, where the highlight of their visit will be a joint concert at Fota House, with the Carrigaline Choral Group on the evening of Sunday March 20th..
The Choir then head for Killarney, with a concert at St Mary’s Church of Ireland Church – and on to Dublin, for the concert at the Abbey Church on the evening of Wednesday March 23, and a recital at St Patrick’s Cathedral the following day at 1 pm. They are very excited about the tour of Ireland, and they are looking forward especially to these concerts.
