On behalf of Cobh Pirates RFC, we would like to thank the generous support for our recent Charity Benefit Match in aid of the Children’s Leukaemia Wards at the Mercy Hospital, Cork & Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. The event was a major success on the day; we were blessed with great weather which added to the occasion.  Pirates fielded an invitational XV against the Munster Junior Team, where the more notably names on the team sheet for Pirates’ were ex-Irish & Munster player, David Corkery and current AIL & ex-Cork GAA star Diarmuid O’Sullivan. We would like to thank all the invited players for participating and engaging in a worthy cause. We would like to thank the Munster Rugby Development Office for supporting the game. The Munster Junior XV had a great local feel to it, with Head Coach, Ian Dunne, Medic, Steve Mulvihill, plus, players James Frahill, Tom Keaveney & Martin Clifford , all members of Cobh Pirates RFC. We wish them the very best for their Inter-Pro series currently under way. An added bonus on the day was the arrival of Ronan O’Gara and Anthony Horgan to lend their support, sign autographs and stand for photos. We are very grateful to them for freely giving up their time on the day.

We would like to acknowledge our invited guests, Cobh Town Mayor, Mr Paddy Whitty, Cork County Councillor, Mr. John Mulvihill, and the very generous Team + Kit Sponsor, Colm O’Brien of Wiser Recycling + Advance Skip Hire. Special thanks must go to An Garda Siochana Cobh, Ted Creedon & the Irish Red Cross, residents of Newtown + Ballynoe Farm, Rushbrooke Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club for facilitating the team lunch, TurfTEC + Tom Holbrooke for the pitch preparation, Tony Wilmott for ground preparation, Eric O’Driscoll from AXIS Marquees, Fidelma Histon of Krazy Castles, Ted McSweeney for BBQ facilities,  Cobh Community Centre for supplying chairs, Karl Long for music, Vincent O’Rourke for PA system, GlaxcoSmithKline for supplying the energy drinks for players, John Malone of GALA Mount Eaton for sponsoring food, Ollie Ryan of Marlogue for facilities, Danny Murphy of Centra for sponsoring food and Kukri for match balls. We would like to thank the draw sponsors, Bridie from Ultimate Sports for the signed Munster Jersey, vintage rugby ball from Westbourne Interiors, John Mannix of Serge Blanco Shop, Peter Ahern Carpentry, Dion McKeown of Commercial Diesel & Electric, Ray & Maura at Keatings Londis, James Cahill of Cahills Costcutters, Ollie at the Marlogue Inn, Garveys Supervalue and our private sponsors. We are indeed indebted to your generosity and ask people to support these local businesses who continue to sponsor community events in these difficult economic times.

A special word of thanks to David Doyle for co-ordinating with the employees at Pfizer Little Island; they raised € 2840 from a cake sale and company donations.  We would also like to thank the match day crew, those who marshalled, Eileen Griffin & crew at the ticket desk, the ball boys, Shandon/Whitechurch u12s who provided the opposition in the curtain raiser, the match officials and MC on the day, Donagh Russell.

Overall, the event was a great community effort, the funds raised on the day, over €16,000, is a true reflection of the generosity of you, the people of Cobh, who purchased match tickets, raffle  tickets, and made private donations. For this, we graciously applaud you and again thank you for your continued support!

We will be making a presentation of monies raised to the associated hospitals in the very near future, once we confirm the availability of one or two Munster players.

Also, on the day, a great club stalwart, Nick O’Keeffe received a special presentation to mark his recent Munster Volunteers award.

Regards
