The launch ceremony of the One Book One Community 2015 reading initiative took place Thursday 5th Feb in Cobh Community Centre. The event was hosted by Carrignafoy Community College and attended by students from St. Mary’s, St.Josephs, Gael Soil Ui Eigeartaigh, Colaiste Muire and Carrignafoy Community College. It was a wonderful opportunity for local schools to come together to celebrate and commemorate the centenary of the Lusitania through the medium of reading.

The author of the book SOS Lusitania, Kevin Kiely spoke of this terrible tragedy engineered by people in power to advance their own plan to force the Americans into World War One. Unlike the fate of the Titanic this truly was not a tragic accident.

Jack O’Leary transition year student performed the poem Lusitania and Rebecca Gardiner read a testimonial by Margaret Cox a survivor of the Lusitania. Both students were dressed in period costumes and delivered moving performances. Our thanks to Laurie O’Driscoll who prepared both students.

We wish to extend our thanks also to the management and staff of Cobh Community Centre, proprietors Maura and Ray Keating. Londis who supplied food and refreshments, to the members of Cobh Animation Group and to all who attended on the day.
