Cobh is in for a treat in the New Year when Cork’s own diva Karen Underwood steps onto the stage at the Sirius Art Centre. “I started singing as a solo artist when Miss Connelly my third grade teacher was teaching us What the World Needs Now by Dionne Warwick. Honey, I’m still singing and believing that song.”

Karen will perform timeless classics from some of the soul greats like Billie Holliday, Nina Simone and Dinah Washington accompanied by classically trained pianist, director, arranger and composer John O’Brien. Karen’s soulful renditions will uplift you and her heartfelt interpretations will move you to tears. There will be tears of laughter too – Karen’s dry sense of humour definitely tickles the Cork funny bone. Clearly both she and John relish performing together, exchanging witty remarks and flirtatious asides.

If you’ve seen her perform before you’ll know what a remarkably passionate and charismatic vocalist she is. Do not miss what promises to be a wonderful evening of stories and song. This intimate event is being held in aid of the Counselling service at Cobh Family Resource Centre, tickets (€20) are limited as the venue has a strict 80 seat limit. This would make a wonderful Christmas present for any soul/jazz/blues fan.

Tickets €20 on sale now from Cobh Family Resource Centre ph. 021 4816103

Karen has recently appeared as Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspary at the Cork Opera House. She has written and performed four shows: The Nina In Me, Singing Nina, The Story of Soul and Of Ladies Lost and Found. She has performed in Olympia, National Concert Hall, Everyman Palace Theatre, Cork Opera House, and INEC Killarney. John O’Brien is musical director of Sweeney Todd, Pagliaci, and more recently Der Vampyr.
