Councillor Cathal Rasmussen Concerns Over Irish Water

Cllr Cathal Rasmussen2Over the course of the weekend I contacted the help desk in Irish Water to report a water leak in the Cobh area. While the operator was very helpful I was dismayed to be informed that after 5.00pm Monday to Friday and all weekend if I want to report a water leak I need to contact the County Council help line. I find this situation most unsatisfactory as Irish Water are now as we all know running the water systems in Ireland. All I wanted to do was to have the leak logged on the system but it looks as if Irish water don’t want to know about the issues after hours.

Also I was informed this week that in many estates all over Ireland including Cobh the Council have not and cannot take charge of many of these areas due to ongoing issues with Irish Water.

I understand that while Irish water are responsible for the water and sewerage they have not agreed to take over any new estates because they are refusing to deal with the pumping stations on these estates. Not that there is any problem with these pumping stations but I gather they are looking for more money to help finance any ongoing works and maintenance  in these stations. Discussions have taken place but the issue is not resolved yet and while one of  the solution may cost the taxpayer more money the residents in the meantime will have to wait for this company to dictate once again.

It’s time for Irish Water to start providing value for money. They as a company have already received a large amount of tax payer’s money to take over and provide water for the people of Ireland. I would hate to think that more money would be given to them when already housing budgets are over extended and many projects cannot begin due to lack of funding.
