BallymoreCobhACA large turnout from Ballymore Cobh AC saw twenty one runners toe the line for the annual BHAA Cork-Cobh 15mile Race. Many of those taking part were using this as a final stepping stone before autumn marathons scheduled for Dublin and Amsterdam. Others had been gradually building to peak for this event itself.

Avril Hastings (2.38.24) made it a memorable birthday when she comfortably completed the distance having began building her endurance from three miles upwards as recently as May of this year. To see this steady progression culminate in an athlete completing a distance that a few months ago might have seemed out of reach, is a credit to the application shown by Avril and many of the other runners who took part over this distance for the first time. Eimear Taft (2.09.40) is another runner who continues to produce some excellent race performances and here was no different despite the step up in mileage, finishing third amongst the club women who took part.

Michael Ryan (2.37.23), Deirdre Meyler (2.19.05) and Carl Pender (2.13.11) will be rightly pleased with there efforts on a day that served up near perfect weather conditions.

Majella Tarbatt (2.13.14) faced up to recent injury concerns with a hugely admirable display to put her on track for a big run in the Dublin Marathon next month.

The ever dependable pairing of Jennifer (2.12.57) and Malcolm Meade (2.12.58) came over the line together soon after Tom O’Riordan (2.09.57) and Donal Downey (2.09.08) had both finished strongly.

Dublin bound trio Sinead Daly (2.09.56), Terry Murphy (2.08.16) and Kevin Jones (2.07.43) ran comfortably throughout and this will be a big confidence booster when heading to the nations capital in four weeks.

Luke Doyle (2.05.05), running over this distance for the first time, finished full of running and continues to improve as the season goes on.

Fiona O’Sullivan Downey (2.02.24) came second amongst the female contingent in black and amber with a typically consistent showing.

Kevin O’Keeffe (2.01.33) geared up for his big day in Amsterdam with a solid run here that indicates he will be making a considerable improvement on his current marathon record in three weeks time.

James Donovan (2.00.58) continues to go from strength to strength and set himself up for Dublin with another sound effort here.

Stephen Pender (2.00.02) and Shane Meyler (1.57.41) took third and second place between the club men who ran and both are in great form ahead of their main event on the October Bank Holiday weekend.

First club lady home on the day was the brilliant Orla O’Rourke (1.53.04) who will add another marathon to her already impressive tally when she lines up on Fitzwilliam Street next month.

Trevor Cummins (1.36.28) was the first club runner home on the the day and laid down another solid effort in preparation for an attempt at a sub three hour marathon next month.

Stepping beyond the half marathon distance and running fifteen miles is not achieved without a certain amount of commitment and determination and genuine congratulations goes to ever single member who took part in arguably one of the best races of the season to date.

A big well done also to Tracey Whelan who was part of the 10,000 strong field who raised much needed funds for various charities when completing the Cork Women’s Mini-Marathon on the same day.

And there you have it, just another day in the wonderful life of Ballymore Cobh AC.
