wandererssmallFAI Junior Cup 1st Round – Result: Cobh Wanderers 1-0 Buttevant.

A slimmed down junior squad arrived for this cup game on Sunday morning but the outcome was another victory to keep the momentum going for the season. The visitors however started the brighter and had a good chance to take the lead after 13 minutes when a mix-up at the back allowed the Buttevant forward clear. He rounded the keeper and his effort had to be cleared off the line by Kevin doody. The home side’s first chance came only a minute later when Tommy Cronin went down the right wing and crossed for Brady to head toward goal. The keeper spilled the ball back to Damo and they both collided on the follow-up where Brady came off the worse. A long ball out of defence was headed backwards by Pa Brady into the path of the forward, through on goal. Pa did very well to recover the situation and get a block in to stop the follow-up shot.

The resultant corner was met firmly with a free header but Sean McDermott plucked the ball out of the air above his head. On 32 minutes the team produced one of the best moves ever seen at the venue. Damo, Griffin and Quigley exchanged passes down the left and worked the ball into the box where Griffin back-heeled to the in-running Quigley. He took the ball across the edge of the box past the defender and made the space to hit a sweet right footer to the back of the net giving the keeper no chance. A great move and a great finish, worthy of winning any game. As it turned out it was enough to win this one but Griffin nearly increased the lead coming up to half time when he chipped the keeper but just too high and over the crossbar. The last chance of the half came as a result of a poor clearance from the Buttevant defender across the box where Stack nearly got in but the ball didn’t run for him and the danger was snuffed out.

Wanderers had a good level of control in the second half with Andy Hogan dominant in midfield alongside Anthony O’ Beirnes who won every ball in the air and most things on the ground. Tommy Cronin put a towering header to clear from a corner early in the second half. Ten minutes in and Griffin again found himself clear on goal but his effort was well tipped round the post by the keeper. A long ball across the field was met on the volley, 40 yards out, by Cronin and the ball sailed towards the top corner of the net for what would have been the goal of any season but the keeper managed to save it at the death. On the hour mark Quigley and Brady combined well again down the left and Quigley’s cross picked out Stack but his blast went closer to the corner than the goal. Cormac Downing powered a headed out of defence and the ball fell to Griffin who cut back inside and curled the ball wide of the far post. Soon after Downing caught the ball sweet with a left foot shot which the keeper was grateful to gather down his throat. A minute later McDermott had to dive full length to save a long range effort. Chris McCarthy came on with about ten minutes left and put in a great energetic shift to ensure the team progressed to the next round of the F.A.I. junior cup. Back to the league next Sunday morning at home to Crosshaven.
