On Friday, October 17th, an exciting new group, The Molgoggers will play at Fota House.

Based in Cobh, this new sea shanty and maritime song group has a repertoire which is based on a combined total of 110 years sea time. The shanties and songs explore the heritage of sailing, whaling and life at sea. Each song is interspersed with explanations of maritime terms, nautical poetry and even tall tales of the activities of sailors. The group of 9 men has been featured on National and International radio, attended numerous festivals and performed on the new television station “Irish TV”. Their first CD entitled “Maiden Voyage” was launched earlier this year and contains 16 tracks of popular sea shanties.

The Molgoggers was established in Cobh by Jim Halligan, well known for his songwriting and willingness to sing at the drop of a hat. Jim approached a number of his former colleagues and asked them if they would be interested in keeping alive the great maritime tradition of sea shanties. The result: nine gravelly voices come together every Monday to sing and relate memories of times at sea.

Sea shanties were originally used on board sailing ships to a rhythmic chant so that sailors could work in unison in difficult tasks such as hauling sails and weighing anchors. The group has chosen a special collection of fast and slow shanties and maritime songs for their forthcoming performance in Fota House. Jim Halligan recently said “of all the venues in which we have performed, Fota House will be our most interesting and appropriate to date”.

As the group’s last two concerts were sold out, early booking is advised.

Time: 8.00 pm – Tickets: €20.00

To book, telephone Fota House – 021 4815543.
