It took members of Cobh Knitting Club, affectionately known as ‘The Knit and Knatter Squad’, approximately three months, using decades of acquired skills in the fine art of the woolen craft, to piece together ‘Monty The Python’ (pictured above) in an effort to raise much needed funds for the Cobh Lions Club.

Monty, who was officially measured from the tip of his tongue right down to the tip of his tail at Cobh Garda Station by Community Garda, Eric McCarthy, spent all day on the Saturday of the Cobh people’s Regatta outside of the BMC Stores in Cobh in the company of his creators as the public were given a chance to guess the length of the very colourful snake at a cost of €1.00 per guess or three for €2.00, with all collected monies (approximately €300) going directly to their chosen beneficiary Cobh Lions.

Monty’s correct length was a well kept secret until Saturday evening when it was confirmed by Rose Brien Harrington that the officially measured length was 16m 50cm 1mm

Winner of the guessing competition are as follows:

1st Prize, Voucher for Fota Wildlife Park, Cathtriona Anderson.
2nd Prize Cobh Road Train Trip, Kathrin Jaeger,
3rd Prize Voucher for Coral Leisure, Danny Crowley,
4th Prize Home Hairdo, Niamh McHugh

The club would like to acknowledge donations of prizes from the following: Vouchers from Fota Wildlife Park, Coral, Cobh Road Train and a Home Hairdo by Majella Coffey.

The Knit and Knatter Squad meet at 10.30 on Wednesday mornings in Cobh Library if anyone would like to join them. Knitting or crochet, or any needlework, are welcome. Tea and biccies and great craic. All levels welcome, from beginners to experts.
