SunflowersThe Cobh Flower & Horticulture Club Festival of Flowers Committee under the chairmanship of Mary Frahill, hosted a reception on the Roof Top Garden of the Commodore Hotel, Cobh on Thurs last. There were over 70 representatives of businesses and clubs from the town in attendance.

This Festival of Flowers entitled “History, Dreams & Memories” will be staged in the magnificent St. Colman’s Cathedral on 20th and 21st Sept. Flower arrangers and garden centres will interpret the history of Cork Harbour and its many tragedies and triumphs throughout the past centuries; they will recall the maritime, military and industrial stories, the famous sons who emigrated on the majestic transatlantic liners and those who visited our shores. The famous Carillon played by the late Staf Gebruers and now by his son Adrian, and the Telford Organ – one of only a few still in use today, and for which this festival will raise funds to restore, will also be portrayed. The now almost forgotten trades carried out by our forebears, the distant memories of schooldays and play days, the highdays and holidays of bygone years will all be remembered in this extravaganza of flowers.

The members of the club have been growing and potting up plants which will be for sale over the festival weekend. Refreshments will be available and a raffle will also be held. The entry fee is 10 euro and this will include a brochure giving the details of exhibitors and explaining how each interpreted their individual title, – a cuppa is also included. There will be over 80 individual exhibits and the people of Cobh are in for a treat in this “once in a lifetime” event. Exhibits will be on show inside and outdoors and there is certain to be something to suit everyone.

All will be done with flowers and foliage, and those taking part will come from all over Ireland – a truly ambitious achievement!

The club is very grateful for the generous sponsorship received from Port of Cork Co., Fota Island Resort, Cobh Credit Union, Cobh Regional Council, Bloomfield Flowers, Merck Millipore and the Commodore Hotel.
Further updates will be issued over the coming weeks, and the GICN hopes to keep the people of Cobh informed.
