This was a must win game for Cobh, simply a win and they would qualify for the knockoutstages of the competition.
Cobh started well and created a number of early chances without scoring. After 5 minutes Cobhtook the lead when Jennifer McCarthy goaled from close range after good work from Toni Butler and Orla Damery. Katelyn Quinlann added 2 points from free’s both well struck.Newtown came more into the game and had the next 2 points one coming from a free. Cobhcontinued to play well with Emma Moran commanding at centre back and Aggie Douglas and Chloe Cashman on top in midfield. Cobhwere next to score after Chloe Cashman fed Toni Butler who played Megan Foley through for a good goal. Newtown responded with a goal of their own but Clodagh Tibbits playing her first game in goal for Cobh U16’s brought off some good saves to prevent further goals. The Cobh full backline were on top with Ashling Farrell, Sorcha McKeown and Tara Looney giving theCobh goal good protection. Newtown added 2 further points from free’s. Cobh were still playing well and finished the half on top with the impressive Toni Butler scoring a goal and points from Shannid Mcgrath and Katelynn Quinlann left Cobh leading at the break 3 -4 V 1-4.
The home team came out with all guns firing and scored a class goal to narrow the lead.Cobh eventually got back into the game and a point from Shannid Mcgrath eased the pressure. Sophie Maher and Jessica Blake came more into the game and helped to reduce theNewtown attacking treat. Katelynn Quinlann playing well all night had the next goal for cobh with a good shot. Newtown came back with a goal of their own but Cobh with Aggie Douglas now operating at Half back and Sorcha Mckeown exerting control at full back took control of the game and played their best camogie in the last 10 minutes. Megan Foley combined well with katelynn Quinlann whose long delivery was finished to the net by Shannid Mcgrath. Jennifer McCarthy goaled shortly after despite been put under severe pressure by
theNewtown defence. It was fitting that the last score a point from distance came from Katelynn Quinlann who excelled all night. Cobh remain un defeated and qualify for the Knockout stages thanks in no small way to the contribution of the U 14girls Final score Cobh 6 – 7 V Newtown 3 – 4.
