Great Island Spring Clean 24th Apr

The campaign to clean up Cobh and the Great Island continued on Saturday last when volunteers took to the streets, housing estates and back areas of Cobh to remove litter and give the area a thorough Spring Clean.

The turnout was patchy with some areas teeming with volunteers while other areas had no activity.

Four Council truckloads of litter was collected, the Black railings on the Lake Road were repainted, and  the main road at Rushbrooke was given a thorough cleaning by Rushbrooke Rowing Club and the Five Foot Way was cleaned by Cobh Hockey Club.

Three businesses made a concerted effort to clean the areas near their premises. Keating’s Londis had staff members out early, the staff of Gill’s on Top of the Hill cleaned Midleton street and Pat O’Shea and Robert Fitzpatrick were busy sweeping along Westbourne Place in the early afternoon. These businesses have shown a way forward  by becoming “Litter Champions” and pledging to maintain areas near their premises on an ongoing basis.

A large amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment was also brought to the Five Foot Way as a part of the WEEE collection.
