Cobh under 14s recently played round three and four of their County Camogie League Matches. First up was a Harbour Derby with our neighbours from across the water Aghada. The Cobh girls settled well into this game after a slow start, and played a fast direct game of hurling. There were strong defensive performances by Tara Looney and Ellen Meaney, ably assisted by Emma Moran and Aisling Farrell. Despite dominating strongly in the possession stakes we found scores hard to come by and went in at the break a point down. On the resumption, we continued from where we left off at the break and our half time switch of Jennifer Mc Carthy and Sophie Maher worked well. We had a lot of ball going in and Laura Stafford hit the back of the net. We managed to keep the Aghada girls scoreless from play in this half but for reasons unknown to many we conceded a penalty which was converted successfully. This left us one point down. Time was not on our side and despite Trojan efforts by all, but in particular Aisling Bardsley, Orla Damery, Dannile Hayes, and Chloe Cashman making a notable contribution from the bench we agonisingly failed to find the net in the dying seconds.
Next up saw us take on Ballinora, and this saw the return of Aoife O Connor after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury. Once more we had the ground hog day experience of dominating the game possession wise but still finding it difficult to ratch up a few scores on the scoreboard. The first half was a game for the faint hearted and at the half time whistle both sides were scoreless. We had a solid goalkeeper in Orna Mc Carthy and Toni Butler hurled a lot of ball out from the back line. Emmily Farrel was heavily involved in moving the ball towards the danger area. However on the turnaround the Cobh girls started playing to their potential and despite going a goal behind responded immediately with an equaliser from the ever dangerous Shannid Mc Grath. Ballinora then went a point ahead again, but we reacted magnificently with another point from Shannid, coupled with a great goal from Aoife O Connor and finally once more Shannid made the game safe four us with a three pointer. We had notable contribution from our bench in particular Kate Maher, ably assisted by Aoife Histon and Chloe Walsh.
