camogie-crest400x4001Our playing season started in earnest last weekend with our minors kicking it all off with a very good win V’s StCatherine’s  A close affair at half time saw our girls come out strong in the second period taking the game to our visitors, a strong platform laid by our defence, ably led by Aoife Sheehan and Sorcha McKeown enabled our midfield to drive ball to our forwards who duly obliged outscoring our opponents well and leaving us with a well deserved win with great running displays from Lauren Van Wijnen and Megan Foley, on a score of 3.06 to 2.04. Next up our Juniors playing their first league game, in absolute terrible conditions, after stepping up to the Junior B league for this season.Result was 0-4 to 0-2 played with a very strong wind in the first half and were 0-3 to 0-0 ahead. Had plenty possession but were wasteful in front of goals.Second half saw newtown start with two points but some excellent defending in particular from the half-back line kept them at bay. Late free put two between the teams. Second half showed real guts and determination to win the game playing against the elements.

Team: Nicola O’Sullivan, Mags Kearney, Mari Moynihan, Elaine Moynihan, Alison McKiernan, Aoife Hart, Niamh Meaney, Aoife Richardson, Lauren van Wijnen, Nicole Sawani, Chloe Smith, Siobhan Looney, Ellen Spriggs, Yvonne Maher, Kate Ronan. Subs: Mary Guilfoyle, Niamh O’Connor, Ellen O’Regan.

Our U16s travelled to Tracton on Friday in a game in which the result was determined by the official…..we were slow to start but when we bounced back with scores from Kate Ronan 1.02 and Ellen O Regan kept us in he game, going in level at half time. Cobh then started the strongest  with goals from Ellen ORegan and Aggy Douglas (a cracker by all accounts) and again our Niamh Meaney led defence holding tough left us 5 points up with 4mins remaining. One would have thought just keep them at bay and job done but apparently the official had other ideas…playing camoge’s equivalent of fergie time and allowing the home side to re-take a blatant fouled free until the required goal was notched up, leaving the scoreline 5.04 to Cobh’s 4.06  regardless of the result it was a fantastic display by our girls well done all .

Fixtures for week. Juniors away on Monday night to Youghal and Friday night  to Ballincollig. U14’s  kick their season off on Wednesday night at home throw in at 7
