Sherlock Seeks Fast Tracking Of Group To Monitor Haulbowline

CORK East Labour party TD Seán Sherlock has called on the Minister for the Environment to expedite the establishment of a working group to oversee remediation works at Haulbowline Island. Deputy Sherlock tabled a parliamentary question on the matter to Minister John Gormley who has replied that the establishment and timing of the convening of this group is entirely a matter for the OPW.

Minister Gormley also stated that his department had written to the OPW in February with regard to the terms of reference, recommending that a suitable mechanism be put in place for ongoing dialogue with local
communities to ensure that the group can take account of their views in arriving at an overall approach.

”I intend to keep up the pressure with regard to the proper management of this site which is still a cause of concern locally. I have now written to the OPW seeking confirmation on the progress being made on the
establishment of a working group. I will continue to liaise with my Labour Party colleagues in Cobh on this issue,” stated Deputy Sherlock
