Thanks to the Cobh Ferry it is possible to cycle a 40Km circuit around Cork Harbour. The ferry provides the vital link to complete this beautiful route, much of it on waterfront paths. Thanks to Cross River Ferries staff the cyclists have been well cared for on the river crossing for the last 10 years, without fail and every year the company provides free transport for the cyclists.

The Cork Harbour Cycle is a fundraiser for Africa Direct, an all voluntary charity based in Cork and open to members. Sponsorship funds raised by cyclists has been used to transform the destitute Kipsongo slum in western Kenya into a habitable proud village by replacing tiny shacks built with waste plastic scraps, with 120 two roomed houses of mud and wattle type construction with iron corrugated roofs, windows and a door built by the local community. Through training for the women, who now produce soap products, candles and crafts, with plans to rent land to grow maize, they are becoming self sufficient.

Cyclists can start in either Cobh at Carrigaloe ferry park or in the city at Albert Quay. For details register at corkcycle@gmail.com or phone 021 4821229. It is a leisure cycle for all, cyclists start in their own time and cycle at their own pace. You’ll be guided along the course with maps, directions and stewards, local Cobh stalwart Maura Keane will set you on your way. The route keeps to the waterfront around the harbour and about one third is on coastal paths, map and leaflet available on request. It is a beautiful 40Km. circuit made possible by the Cobh Ferry………A Ferry Important Cycle.
