Cobh Pirates RFC News

Gavin Owens Benefit Night
Cobh Pirates RFC would like to thank all those that helped make the Gavin Owens Benefit Night such a success. Entertainment on the night was provided by the band Dirty Secret, Darragh McGann, Katie McGroarty and Shane Coleman.  Redmond Hallahan and Dominic Losty established a Skype link with Gavin in his hospital in Australia and it was a great bonus for family and friends on the night. There was a great auction organised by Ruairi Geary and Barry Walsh. Sincere thanks to all the businesses and organisations that made donations or provided raffle/auction items. Axis Marquees and Supermac’s Cobh also provided wonderful support on the night. Bar manager, Alan and his staff, club officers and committee members helped to make it a well-managed and successful, enjoyable event.

There is still money to come in and once it is all reconciled the amount raised will be put up in FB and local media. The trustees have established a new account in AIB, Cobh to manage the fund. Once again a big thanks to all patrons, ticket sellers and the whole Cobh community for the great support for Gavin.

On The Field
Cobh Pirates got the Munster Junior League off to a successful start at the Paddock on Sunday beating Tralee 16-15. Pirates were 12-3 down at half-time but upped the effort in the second half. Out-half, Eoin Geary, kicked two penalties but Tralee made it 15-9 going into the last 15 minutes. Cobh made some fine breaks and showed some very sharp handling which was rewarded in the first minute of injury time when Tom Keavany went over for  a try. Eoin Geary converted and Pirates held out to get the League off to a good start. Pirates travel to St. Senan’s, Ennis next sunday, 7th October, for the next round.

The u/13’s had an excellent friendly against Muskerry on Saturday. They were beaten in injury time to make the score 27-32 but they showed great skill throughout.Jim Keavany, Conor Pasley, Alex Mulligan and Charlie Rasmussen put in great displays. The team produced great passing rugby which was rewarded with five tries from Jim Keavany (2), Olan Farrell, Cathal O”Dea and Dan Sheehan, Adam Delaney providing the conversion. The match will stand to them when they get into the League in a few weeks time.

There is a very well-organised programme of minis rugby every Saturday morning at 11 am. All welcome from u/6 up.
