Tidy Towns Greening of Cobh Regatta

Published

on

Cobh Tidy Towns are delighted with the positive response from the local community for the ‘Greening of the Cobh People’s Regatta’ last weekend. This is the first time that Cobh Tidy Towns have promoted the ‘Greening’ of an event and the hope is that this is the first step in Cobh as a town becoming more sustainable. The Goal for Greening the Cobh People’s Regatta was to promote waste prevention, raise environmental awareness, reduce by one half the amount of waste going to landfill and of course to reduce the amount of litter on the streets during the Regatta weekend. Thanks to the support and encouragement of the local community all of these goals were achieved.

Volunteers assisted the public during the Regatta to dispose of their waste in the appropriate bin at the Waste/Recycling stations on Saturday and Sunday. Banners and posters with environmental messages were posted around the promenade. Cobh Youth Services youth volunteers helped to man the recycle stations. Local food vendors in the Promenade and the bars downtown embraced the idea of using compostable food and beverage containers supplied by a Cork company Down2Earth materials. The compostable plates, knives and forks along with food waste and compostable beer cups will be brought to an industrial composter in Tipperary where it will all decompose within ten weeks.Wiser Bins sponsored the recycle bins and Greenstar sponsored the bins for compostable/food waste. Thanks to Whelan’s stores and the Commodore Hotel for their assistance with storing the bins on their premises. Thanks also to Cobh Town clerk Paraig Lynch and the Cobh UDC Council staff for their assistance in making this initiative such a success.

Puppeteers entertained children with The story of the Rubbish Monster? an entertaining production which encourages audience participation while containing a very beneficial message. Cork County Council kindly sponsored this show.

Great Thanks also to Dr Mary Stack Environmental Awareness Officer for Cork County Council for her invaluable practical help and guidance in assisting Cobh Tidy Towns in this exciting initiative.
