Captain Frank picked a glorious week in early June 2011 for the most prestigious club competition of the Year. And it was a quasi “double-celebration as the club moved into another intermediate clubhouse, which was built over the past 10 weeks and was just ready to be used. Tasty coffees, tea and home-made cakes (thanks to the Ladies for doing all this work!) contributed to a really great atmosphrere! Ladies and Men competed for the fantastic prizes – but even more for the honour to win this important event. Ladies played on Tuesday. And for the mens competition it got almost too warm on Friday and Saturday, with a breeze and some clouds on Sunday – but not a drop of rain! More than 340(!) members played over the 4 days!
In the Ladies section, Marie Hughes prooved to be too strong for the field, and took top honours just ahead of Rose Stack. Conor Cronin came out top in the strong Men’s field! Well done! With a fantastic net score of 63(!) Michael Collins was awarded second place. Congratulations to them and all the other winners! All results can be found on the cobhgolfclub webpage. Prize presentations were done in the Commodore Hotel on June 5th – photos of all winners who were able to attend, can be seen in this set. Unfortunately, Conor Cronin could not make it to the prize giving – he was away on holiday! The following Party was brilliant – “Disco Dan” knew how to get the already great-humoured crowd on the dancefloor! Captain Frank and his wife Killester were undoubtedly the stars of the evening! Thanks so much for giving us a great week of golf!
Cobh GC – Lady Captain’s Prize June 2011
Margaret Hurst also stroke it lucky on “her” big weekend middle of June! Sun again, and the weather forecast was proven wrong once more! No wonder that the weather gods were smiling, as the effort made by Margaret and her family was fabulous! The first prize was a delicate antique table, with a beautiful matching lamp – every Lady wanted their hands on this trophy (for keeps!). And Marguerite O’Brien was worthy winner in the end, with 4 Ladies just one (!) stroke behind! Congratulations Marguerite! Pre competition celebrations and unwrapping of prizes was an event worth attending already on the night before the competition! The night of prize giving was one of those “never forget” nights, with great music, sing-songs and lots of good humour and laughter! Thanks Lady Captain Margaret for a super enjoyable weekend!
Upcoming President’s Prize July 12 and 16&17
Another big week for the Club starts on Tuesday, 13 July to 17th July, when first the Ladies and then the Men play it out for the prestigious President’s Prize. Noreen Kelly is a great Club President and we all hope for another sun-drenched week and great participation!
