Cobh Enjoys Prosperous Weekend

Being the largest Cruise Liner to visit an Irish port, the Independence of The Seas made her first visit the season to Cobh on Sunday. Weighing in at 154, 407 tonnes the giant liner berthed in Cobh at approximately 4.00pm on a wet but not so miserable afternoon, but not before greeting and passing another cruise giant, the 120,000 tonne Celebrity Eclipse, which had arrived in Cobh on Saturday.

Never before have two cruise liners of this size been seen in the harbour at the same time let alone pass each other and the excitement and buzz this created in and around the town was amazing to say the least as hundreds of people lined the water front and any other available space to watch the Independence of The Seas maneuver in the swinging basin between Haulbowline and Cobh just upriver of the Celebrity Eclipse which then began to pull out and away from the deepwater berth in Cobh.

Cobh & Harbour Chamber once again outdid themselves as CEO Kathleen Geary and her team launched their ‘Summer Swing’ for the year on Saturday. The Promenade side of Westbourne Place was once again lined with market traders from around the country, but this year also saw alot of local traders stall-up. We counted nine local traders who took stall locations this year which is very inspiring indeed. Entertainment organised by the Chamber over both days consisted of heaps of Live Music including Back On Track on Saturday and the Big Band on Sunday afternoon, Face Painters, Traditional Music and a T-Cup Carousel for the children. The next event for the Chamber will be Sunday 15th May. Stay tuned for details or visit the Cobh & Harbour Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cobh-Harbour-Chamber/130233193657079

Also very noticeable over the weekend were the Cobh Tourism Ambassadors, kitted out in their green high visibility vests. These Ambassadors are an invaluable asset on days like these, as they carry the knowledge to help and assist  tourists
