Cobh Ramblers 2 Killarney Celtic 1

Cobh Ramblers continued their great run in the Under 16 National Cup with this hard fought victory against Killarney Celtic to qualify for the quarter final of the competition. On a beautiful day for football the opening exchanges of the game were played at a frantic pace as both teams tried to gain an advantage. The home side settled quickly and began to put some neat passing moves together and had the Killarney side under pressure. But as the half wore on Killarney began to gain more possession in the centre of the park and were the dominant side as the first half drew to a close.

The second half began again at a frantic pace and the defining moments of the game happened in the first ten minutes. Firstly Killarney took the lead when a cross from the left eluded the home defence to reach an unmarked Celtic striker who coolly slotted a low volley to the corner for the lead goal. Stung in to action Ramblers upped the ante to take the game to the away side and were rewarded a minute later when Jason Abbott played a sweet cross field pass to Jason Dunphy on the right wing. Dunphy controlled the ball and played a great low ball to Dave Cahill in the penalty area and Cahill rifled the ball past the Celtic keeper for the equaliser. Having recovered the deficit and now in the ascendancy Ramblers hammered home their advantage when they quickly won a corner on the left. From the kick there was confusion in the Celtic goal and after a melee the ball was forced home by Daniel Santry.

To their credit the Kingdom side did not give up and took the game to Ramblers for the remainder of the tie. They won a lot of possession and created a number of chances to equalise. They were thwarted repeatedly by some sterling defence but especially by the form of Shane Hallahan in the Rambler’s goal. Shane made a number of superb saves, one memorable one when he stretched to gather a shot that was bound for the top corner. Ramblers weathered the storm to run out victors by a 2-1 score line.  They have now qualified for the quarter final stage of the competition and are rewarded with a home tie against St Patrick’s Athletic or Ballyheane from Mayo.
