Innishvilla 1 Cobh Ramblers 0
Cobh Ramblers did everything but score in this Under 16 Premier League tie at Jake O’Donoghue Park. On a frozen pitch both sides started tentatively as the underfoot conditions made it difficult for the players to stay on their feet. The home side adapted sooner to the conditions and they went ahead after 20 minutes when after a move down the left the ball came back into midfield and a sweet strike was sent sailing past Shane Hallahan in the Ramblers goal. After the goal Ramblers took the game to the home side and created several chances in the home penalty area. There was some great interplay down the right wing between full back Ian Murphy and Dave Curran in midfield creating chances inside for centre forward Dave Cahill. Cillian Tallon with a deft touch played a great ball through to Cahill but the hard surface was lightning fast and carried the ball away to safety for the home side.
In the second half Ramblers increased the tempo and created chance after chance on the Innishvilla goal. One of these came about when after a move on the left the ball was crossed in to the far post where Tony O’Donovan was unlucky to see his header strike the post. The pressure finally paid off when after a move through the centre the home side committed a foul but the goalkeeper made a great save from the resultant penalty. Ramblers continued to press and O’Donovan was unlucky to see another header cleared off the line. Then Curran saw a great shot tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper. Dave Cahill had several opportunities throughout the half but could not add the finishing touch. To their credit the home side put up a great rearguard action and could have increased their lead in the closing minutes as Ramblers continued to chase the game.
